Chapter 16

Gunner stands at the bar with Josh, his hands clenching and unclenching as the nerves hit him. His army buddies arrive tonight, and something inside has him anxious. They’re good guys. The best, actually. But they’re getting patched in, possibly, without prospecting and understanding exactly what the club life means.

“Gunner, you motherfucker!” a large man with shoulders broad enough to barely fit through the doorway of the clubhouse shouts. “I knew you’d need me to save your ass yet again.”

Josh’s eyes widen as he looks at the man and the four others who filter inside in a line. It’s very evident they’ve all been through military training.

Gunner smirks as he walks up to the man, nearly being enveloped by his large body as he’s pulled into a giant bear hug. “Norris, you’re still an asshole, you know that?”

“Yeah, well, a leopard doesn’t change his spots, right?”

The thought makes his stomach roll. He thought he could change his spots, but with what’s going on with Reagan, maybe he’s right. “Everyone, this is Jacob Norris. We all call him Patriot. His family’s been part of the military all the way back to the Revolutionary War. He bleeds red, white, and blue.”

Patriot walks up to Lex, who gives him a surprised look as she stops talking with Felicity. “Hey, good looking. How you doing?” he asks with a wink.

Gunner’s eyes fly to Colt, who glares at the man, but Lex takes it in stride. As usual. Lifting her left hand up to rest her chin on it to showcase the beautiful diamond on her hand, she smiles. “I’m doing well. My husband takes very good care of me. And my son.”

“My bad,” he says and holds his hands up before stepping backwards. “I just like to flirt, but I have boundaries. And married women are off-limits.”

“Word of advice,” Gunner says. “Make sure the women in the room aren’t taken before you hit on them. You may be big, but many of these men can kick your ass and make you cry for your mama before you know what’s hit you.”

“Is that right?” he asks and looks around the room, almost as though he sees the warning as a challenge, until his eyes land back on Lex.

He places a hand on the new man’s shoulder. “Uh, cool the flirting down. That’s Lex Nichols. She, along with Tess,” he says and points to Jennings’s wife, “are the two you don’t want to fuck with. If they speak, you listen. Tess is the old lady to the President, Jennings, and Lex is the daughter of the VP and daughter-in-law of the Sergeant at Arms. Not to mention the best friend of the resident Psycho. You’ll be strung up and bleeding for days before anyone finds you.”

“You’re all that and a bag of chips, huh?” he asks Lex.

Her eyebrow raises. “Something like that. You think you’re hot shit, don’t you?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Call me ma’am again, and I’ll hit you myself. And believe me, I’m a hell of a lot stronger than I look.
